Media Ramblings

I've played a ton of video games, watched a ton of movies and shows, and listened to a ton of music in my years on this earth. Honestly, I can't wait to experience even more! This page is to document some of my favorites, and to discuss what kind of stuff I love. This is going to be a section of the site that's almost always under construction... seeing as I'm constantly on the lookout for new fun media to consume :D

Movies/TV

In terms of movies, there's a lot I've seen--it's hard to pin down which, if any, i'd call my favorites. TV is a little easier, if only because there are fewer that I have dedicated viewership to. One such show is House, MD, which is a series I've been watching... more or less since it was new. I remember seeing it on the family tv when I was younger, and it sort of stuck. I have that whole thing on DVD set, all eight seasons!

Another such show is the original CSI series, actually. I've got most of the series on box set.

Back on the note of movies, there's a handful of them aimed at younger audiences--weirdly enough, a not-insignificant number from the late 90s--that I look back on fondly. A lot of that weird interim of Disney movies, like Treasure Planet, A Bug's Life, Lion King... But beyond that, there's also the Matrix, which--the first one, I've probably seen all the way through a dozen times. Ditto with Jurassic Park, actually. Tron, both the original and the sequel, are pretty far up there as well. The Martian, Enemy at the Gates, Pacific Rim... the list of movies I've watched over and over just keeps going.

Of course, I can't discount my other favorite weird, obscure movies. World Race was pretty formative for me, as well as the reboot movies from 2005. There's also the original 1986 Transformers Movie, although that I tend to watch more as a way to rope my friends into watching it with me! It's become a bit of a running joke, at this point, but all the same--part of my love of watching movies is getting to do it with my friends.

Video Games

I've played so many different games at this point, that it's really difficult to summarize everything. I've played a few pretty old games, but the ones I started with are from the early 00s--when I was a kid, and my parents were just getting a hold on being normal adults. They were in their 20s through the 90s, so all the stuff they did as young adults rubbed off on me as a kid; I played old platformers a lot, like Sonic, Crash Bandicoot... I remember watching my dad play the old Gran Turismo games all the time, even!

I've also had a lot of fond memories built up in the late 2000's, early 2010s. Playing Wii with my younger sibling, collecting game toys, and eventually saving up my chore allowances to buy myself a refurbed Xbox 360 in ~2013. Halo 3 was my first shooter, and then I got into Destiny... I can still almost quote the Become Legend trailer verbatim, front to back. I plan to get a tattoo of the Warlock emblem at some point, because the game's just changed the way I think of things and approach things like art.

In recent years, I've endeavored to try and broaden my palette, pulling from games before I was a sentient human person. Unreal Tournament 2004 is one of those games; it's rapidly shot up to being one of my most frequents. I've tried Quake 3, too, with a friend. Loads of fun.
Even newer games that just emulate the style are a good mood to me! ULTRAKILL is absolutely one of them; I've quickly fallen in love with the fast pace and flexibility of the weapons and their mechanics.

Generally speaking, I'm really into shooters. Though, as with anyone, I jump around a ton. One of my most-played by time on steam is Astroneer, a base-builder that I happened across almost on accident! I've completed all the achievements on steam, and I've sunk whole days into it with my closest buddies. I've also dropped over 100 hours into Hollow Knight, though I'm not the best at it, haha. It harkens back to the challenging platformers of my youth, and the skill demand means that I almost can't get bored of it! Of course, I still love weird, creative games too. Spore is an oldie-but-goodie that's chock full of nostalgia, and I've even got a little tag for it on my Tumblr.

At some point, I'll consider individual pages for my gaming addiction, and probably share fan-content I've made. :)

Music

My music taste is honestly all over the place. My parents being young adults in the 90s really influenced me; a lot of my most-listened-to music orbits my birth year because of it! Artists like TOOL and Alice in Chains aren't my favorites, but they are in my heavy rotation. Others, from the 80s and even 70s--Van Halen, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin... Those are embedded in my brain. Kinda fundamentally.

My Last.fm is on my homepage for a reason--I love to share what I'm listening to, and compare what's popular in the groups around me. I tend to be an outlier, but that's all part of the fun of it!

As with a lot of fandom folk, I really love crafting playlists for my stories and characters. I'll share a few of them below :>

Books

I used to be an insanely avid reader, chewing through a dozen books in a season. Anymore, I have less time to dedicate to that, but I have been picking it back up as of late, dedicating an hour or so each day to reading. I have quite the backlog...

My favorite authors, the ones I keep coming back to the most consistently, are probably H.G. Wells, Peter Watts, and Roald Dahl. I know those don't seem to fit together, but just trust me on that, alright? :P

Psst. If you want to go read some of Peter Watts' works for free, he's hosting a few of his novels over at the Rifters website. Highly recommend you check it out!

It's hard to pick out my absolute favorite books, but I can pick some out by merit of rereading them a hundred times over. This list is pretty flexible, and only in a VERY vague order...
